Rooftop Pollinator Habitat — Weil, EC1

We work closely with gardener, Mat Bell, to increase nectar and pollen-rich plants on this eighth-storey terrace, and installed bee hotels and a bee observation box for solitary, cavity-nesting bees. Each July, we welcome pupils from the law firm's partner school onto the terrace for a bee safari and bee hotel workshop.

In 2023, the garden scored 17/20 for good pollinator habitat. "It just goes to show how a small, eighth-storey terrace in the City, that is used for entertaining clients in the summer can also be a haven for many species of wild bees just by planting a diverse range of bee-friendly plants attractive to people and bees throughout the year, " says Dr Konstantinos Tsiolis, Pollinating London Together surveyor.

In 2024, he recorded the rare Brown-banded carder bee (Bombus humilis) on the terrace.

"Urban Bees' entertaining and practical lunchtime sessions about how to help bees have proved extremely popular with our employees at all levels of the firm. It's been a fantastic way to engage employees in sustainability issues. We've really enjoyed learning how to identify different bee species. Employees also appreciate why Weil has transformed its roof terrace to provide food and lodging for wild bees. Pupils who come into the office to make bee hotels and go on a bee safari with Urban Bees, say it's an experience they'll never forget!"
