We created a small rootfop garden for both pollination and people to enjoy on the 5th storey rooftop of Lush's Soho studio.
Each summer, staff go on a 'bee safari' to spot: Wool carder bees collecting fibres from the leaves of Lamb's ear plants; small, black furrow bees foraging on Mexican fleabane, and bumblebees on Bird's-foot trefoil. They also see the life cycle of Red mason bees nesting in the bee observation box - from egg, to larvae, to cocoon.
"As part of an environmentally-conscious company, it was important for us to ensure our London roof space helped nature to thrive as well as being an attractive place for staff to relax. Alison cleverly wove together ornamental plants and wildflowers to create a natural aesthetic that feeds bees throughout the year and looks good for us too. Our colleagues love the variety of beautiful flowers and peeking in our bee nesting box, and Alison's annual summer safari/talk is hugely looked forward to. "
