We built four large, sturdy wooden planters, at the request of building managers Ashdown Phillips, and created a bee haven 12 storeys above the City.
On all our rooftop bee gardens we install a timed, drip irrigation system which comes on in the early morning during hot, dry spells. Thirsty plants conserve nectar, leaving little for hungry bees and other pollinators - and we want our plants to feed bees.
"Urban Bees has done a fantastic job creating a space for wild bees in a tough environment on an exposed, 12-storey roof in the City. We love seeing the Red mason bees each spring, foraging on wallflowers, wild flowers and Rosemary, and nesting in the bee hotels. And other wild bees visit too. Alison and Brian provide an excellent monthly maintenance and client service, and they are keen to share their knowledge about bees with us and the tenants at One Bartholomew."
