Rooftop Pollinator Habitat — Central St Giles, Bloomsbury

We work with Floraform Landscapes and maintenance contractor Q&S to make this vast green roof in the heart of Bloomsbury better for wild bees and other pollinators.

We helped to create a large sand mound for ground-nesting bees, recommend new plants to feed specific bees, and conduct pollinator surveys to monitor biodiversity. Over the last three years we have recorded more than 10 different species of wild bees including furrow bees, flower bees, leafcutter bees, yellow-face bees and plasterer bees.

“Alison has done an excellent job helping to improve biodiversity on the rooftop. She works closely with the designer and maintenance team to recommend additional planting opportunities, and her knowledge and enthusiasm are clear in every aspect of her work. I always look forward to Alison’s monitoring reports and am continually amazed by the number of different species of tiny solitary bees foraging so high up on a windy rooftop in Central London. It really shows that if you plant the right flowers, the bees will come even 12 storeys up!"
