Urban Bees initially installed two hives on the roof of this advertising company in west London. The honeybees flew to nearby Hyde Park to collect nectar to turn into delicious honey, and the honey harvest was a keenly anticipated event in the office with many staff taking turns to spin out the honeycomb.
However, research has shown that honeybees can outcompete wild bumblebees and solitary bees in urban areas.
We advised the client that that best way to help these wild bees was to remove the hives, triple the number of flower-filled planters on the roof and install bee hotels and a bee observation box.
They agreed to our proposal, and the wild bee garden proved to be a great success.
"“Urban Bees did a brilliant job. Brian’s honeybees were the star attraction at the office. The meet the bee sessions he organised for staff were a great hit. It was fascinating to learn about the workings of a hive and how the bees made honey, and a real treat to take part in the harvesting on site. We were so sad to see them go, but we understood it was for the best. The additional planters Alison created for the wild bees really cheered up the view onto the roof from the office windows. And we were glad it was so popular with the local wild bees too. Many came to feed and some even checked into the bee hotels. It was great to see the observation box completely occupied!” "
