{"id":960,"date":"2014-08-28T09:16:15","date_gmt":"2014-08-28T08:16:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/?p=960"},"modified":"2018-08-21T10:18:25","modified_gmt":"2018-08-21T09:18:25","slug":"wildflower-meadow","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/?p=960","title":{"rendered":"Wildflower meadow"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/meadowsowing.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-thumbnail wp-image-966\" alt=\"Alison, Urban Bees, sowing wild flower meadow\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/meadowsowing-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Laying a wildflower meadow turf on a council estate in south London and sowing a strip of wildflowers around it is the beginning of a project Urban Bees and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.riverofflowers.org\/\">River of Flowers<\/a> are doing to transform pockets of ugly, unloved green spaces into vibrant, colourful bee pastures.<\/p>\n<p>This is our first collaboration to improve bee and other pollinator habitats for food and shelter.<\/p>\n<p>We were asked by Lambeth council to come up with ideas for improving the environment and making it more bee-friendly after calls from residents to brighten up the place.<\/p>\n<p>We will be pioneering the planting of wildflower bee pastures for wild bees,  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xavy.fr\/-air-pegasus.html\"> <\/a> honeybees and other pollinators.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alter48.fr\/-magista.html\"><\/a> We\u2019re also creating a \u2018fragrant walk\u2019 with flowering herbs that bees love and dotting some ornamental bee favourites around the estate including hebes,  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fjallravenkankenuk.me.uk\/k-aring-nken-mini-uk.html\"> Mini<\/a> choisyas and wallflowers.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re hoping to get local school children to help us finish this bee and bug hotel.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/beehotel.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-962\" alt=\"beehotel\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/beehotel-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Resident\u2019s will be out planting in May to create the first bee pastures in raised beds. They&#8217;ll also be planting fruit and veg around the estate as part of a local residents&#8217; food growing programme.<\/p>\n<p>Thanks to Crispin and the fathers at  <a href=\"http:\/\/fatnature.blogspot.co.uk\/\">Father Nature<\/a> for doing all the hard lifting,  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xavy.fr\/-air--2012.html\">  2012<\/a> raking and laying for the wildflower meadow.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fjallravenkankensale.me.uk\/kanken-mini.html\"> Mini Backpack<\/a> (Now we have to hope for lots of rain and that people and dogs don&#8217;t trample over it.)<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/crispinlaying.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-963\" alt=\"crispinlaying\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/crispinlaying-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fathernature.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-964\" alt=\"fathernature\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/fathernature-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And to our youngest helper.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/younghelper.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-967\" alt=\"younghelper\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/04\/younghelper-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The lessons we learn here will inform future Urban Bees\/River of Flowers projects to make our cities more pollinator-friendly. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Laying a wildflower meadow turf on a council estate in south London and sowing a strip of wildflowers around it is the beginning of a project Urban Bees and River of Flowers are doing to transform pockets of ugly, unloved green spaces into vibrant, colourful bee pastures.
