{"id":641,"date":"2011-08-16T12:05:49","date_gmt":"2011-08-16T11:05:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/?p=641"},"modified":"2018-08-21T10:18:30","modified_gmt":"2018-08-21T09:18:30","slug":"solitary-bee-habitats","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/?p=641","title":{"rendered":"Solitary bee habitats"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Following the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/environment\/2011\/aug\/07\/projects-to-encourage-solitary-bees?INTCMP=SRCH\"> article <\/a> in The Observer on 7 August about the importance of our 200 odd solitary bees as pollinators, we&#8217;ve been contacted by a number of people asking for more information about how to make bee hotels (houses) and nests for bumblebees.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alter48.fr\/-air--2017.html\"><\/a> There are a few websites with some good step by step guides.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xavy.fr\/acheter-chaussures-.html\"><\/a> The Bee Guardian Foundation has details on<a href=\"http:\/\/www.beeguardianfoundation.org\/make-bee-house.html\"> how to build a bee house <\/a>and a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.beeguardianfoundation.org\/bumble-bee-box-guide.html \">bumblebee box<\/a>, though my understanding is that bumble bee boxes have a low success rate &#8211; better to leave a pile of leaves in the garden or try burying an upturned tea pot &#8211; the queen bee may go in the spout and make her nest in the pot.   <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xavy.fr\/-air--flyknit.html\">  flyknit<\/a> Conservation charity, Bug Life, also provides a blueprint for making <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buglife.org.uk\/getinvolved\/gardening\/beenestsforgardeners\">bee nests<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.buglife.org.uk\/Resources\/Buglife\/Create%20a%20bee%20hotel%202008%20pdf%20for%20web%20and%20colour%20print.pdf\">bee hotels<\/a>.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alter48.fr\/-magista.html\"><\/a> While the BBC&#8217;s Bee Part of It campaign shows you how to make a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/breathingplaces\/wood_pile\/\">wood pile <\/a>in your garden as a  wildlife habitat.<\/p>\n<p>A reader of the article, SteB1,  also pointed out that  many species of solitary bee need other types of nesting site other than bee hotels.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fjallravenkankensale.me.uk\/\"><\/a> Mining Bees, for example, often like sandy banks and exposed soil in which to make their underground nests.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mochilas-kanken.com.es\/mochilas-fjallraven-kanken-big.html\">Mochilas  Big<\/a> He also says; &#8220;The other thing to note, is that whilst called solitary bees, because they don&#8217;t have a complex multi-individual nest society.
