{"id":1072,"date":"2014-08-23T22:00:11","date_gmt":"2014-08-23T21:00:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/?p=1072"},"modified":"2018-08-21T10:17:22","modified_gmt":"2018-08-21T09:17:22","slug":"community-bulb-planting-for-bees","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/?p=1072","title":{"rendered":"Community bulb planting for bees"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Urban Bees and River of Flowers\u2019 spring bulb planting weekend on Clapham Manor Estate went a treat last month.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alter48.fr\/tn-requin-pas-cher-pour-femme.html\">tn requin  pour femme<\/a> The bulbs had been carefully chosen for their attractiveness to bees and other pollinators, to provide food in the spring and throughout the year.<\/p>\n<p>Jim, 10, helped to plant round headed leaks (Allium sphaerocephalon) and Ruby Giant crocuses in raised planters, and masses of native English bluebells (Hyacinthoides non-scripta) with mum Nina in the more shady beds.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fjallravenkankensale.me.uk\/\"><\/a> He said it was better than doing his homework&#8230;.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.alter48.fr\/-internationalist.html\"> internationalist<\/a> and he&#8217;d learned a lot about botany and planting from Kathryn at River of Flowers.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/makingholes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1076\" alt=\"makingholes\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/makingholes-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>   <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/plantingbulbs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1077\" alt=\"plantingbulbs\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/plantingbulbs-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/jimandninabluebells.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1073\" alt=\"jimandninabluebells\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/jimandninabluebells-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/>   <\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kathrynplantingbulbs.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1075\" alt=\"kathrynplantingbulbs\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/kathrynplantingbulbs-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>On Sunday more residents, including Rosemary and Tammy Sharma and her two lovely children, Alex 8, and Shanti, 4 , were out in force clearing a large L-shaped bed that was overgrown with Black Nightshade (Solanum nigrum).  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xavy.fr\/chaussures--femme-2017.html\">chaussures  2017<\/a> Greg Thompson from Lambeth Living, which manages thousands of council homes in the borough, was very popular when he came down with a large bag of cultivated bulbs that the kids enthusiastically planted in the now bare soil.<\/p>\n<p>The L-shaped bed was also the perfect place for some larger shrubs that the bees will like; Dogwood (Cornus), which produces small, creamy-white flowers in May and June, and St John\u2019s Wort (Hypericum) which will have masses of yellow butter cup like flowers which the bees adore from July to October.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Fragrant Walk<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>We kept the Fragrant Walk free of bulbs.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xavy.fr\/-air--2015.html\"><\/a> The bay trees, Lavender and Rosemary bushes looked good once we\u2019d done a huge amount of weeding so you can actually see them!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/weedalert.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1080\" alt=\"weedalert\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/weedalert-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>   <a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/fragrantwalkafterweeding.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1079\" alt=\"fragrantwalkafterweeding\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/fragrantwalkafterweeding-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong> Bee Pasture<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Bee Pasture (which was certainly attracting bees with its wild flowers) was also attracting the ire of some residents who clearly  felt intimidated by the far too tall sunflowers and thistles that needed pulling out.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/thistles.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1078\" alt=\"thistles\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/11\/thistles-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To keep residents on side, beds need regular weeding and  any green rubbish this creates needs to be disposed of quickly.  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.xavy.fr\/-air--tavas.html\">  tavas<\/a> But for this project to work long-term residents themselves will have to nurture the flowers beds and maintain them\u2026.<\/p>\n<p><strong> Plant Locks<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/cyclelockwithwildflowers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-1053\" alt=\"cyclelockwithwildflowers\" src=\"http:\/\/www.urbanbees.co.uk\/blog_1\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/07\/cyclelockwithwildflowers-150x150.jpg\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Six Plant Locks, two on Brayburne Avenue and four on Victoria Rise were cleared  of rubbish and \u2018weeds\u2019 and planted with white Snowdrops (Galanthus nivalis), ruby Crocuses and purple\/bue harebells (Campanulas).  <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mochilas-kanken.com.es\/mochilas-fjallraven-kanken-no-2.html\"> <\/a> There was a giant nettle in one of the Victoria Rise Plant Locks &#8211;
